Wonderful post!! Indeed, who doesn't love a great (inspiring) quote. I live by them! Thanks for providing the correct attribution for one of my favorites, “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” I had this pinned to a mood board at one time. Having read, "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," it was easy to assume that it was a quote from Maya Angelou. Now I'm inspired to learn more about Joan Walsh Anglund and her book of poems!

That's exactly what happened with me. I made the same association between Angelou and the title of her book. It didn't occur to me to question that quote. It was only in doing the necessary research to correctly source each quote I wanted to cite in my publications that I discovered these issues. It was eye-opening. No one cites sources for quotes when they post or share them, so the proliferation of incorrect quotes can be rampant.

Another example of a widely shared quote with incorrect attribution is a Marianne Williamson quote that is incorrectly attributed to Nelson Mandela. You likely have seen this one, too. It's from Williamson's book A Return to Love.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure."
